Ivory Coast Secure Africa First Win at World Cup 2026 as Tunisia Suffer Heavy Defeat

Africa recorded its first victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Ivory Coast claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Ecuador in a Group E match played on Sunday night.

The only goal of the game was scored by Manchester United star Amad Diallo, whose strike proved enough to earn the Elephants three valuable points and make Ivory Coast the first African nation to taste victory at the tournament being hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The result significantly boosts Ivory Coast's hopes of reaching the Round of 32, especially after the other Group E fixture saw Germany crush Curaçao 7-1 to take control of the group with a superior goal difference.

Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Faé praised his team for their discipline and ability to withstand late pressure from Ecuador to secure the important victory.

Meanwhile, Tunisia's World Cup campaign got off to a disappointing start after they suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in a Group F encounter.

Sweden demonstrated their quality from the opening stages, scoring three goals before halftime and leaving Tunisia with a mountain to climb. Although the North Africans managed to score a consolation goal in the second half, they were unable to mount a comeback.

The victory gives Sweden an excellent start to their campaign and places them in a strong position to advance to the next round, while Tunisia will need positive results in their upcoming matches to keep their qualification hopes alive.
