Former Manchester United and England national team defender Rio Ferdinand has arrived in Tanzania for a special visit aimed at strengthening international cooperation in sports, youth development, and promoting Tanzania globally through sports.
The visit follows an official invitation from Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, who said Ferdinand’s arrival is part of the government’s broader strategy to create opportunities for Tanzanian youth through sports and sports diplomacy.
According to reports, Rio Ferdinand is expected to stay in the country from May 19 to May 22, 2026, during which he will visit various sports facilities, meet stakeholders in the sports sector, and hold discussions with government leaders.
In a video message shared online, Ferdinand said he was excited by the discussions he had with Minister Makonda regarding opportunities available in Tanzania in sports, culture, and youth development. He also expressed interest in learning more about Tanzanian culture and seeing how sports can open doors for young people to achieve success.
Minister Makonda stated that the government continues to work with international sports stars to increase Tanzania’s global influence, especially ahead of major events such as the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Ferdinand’s visit is also being viewed as another important step in strengthening Tanzania’s image as a sports and tourism hub in Africa.
Rio Ferdinand is regarded as one of the greatest defenders in English football history and won several major trophies with Manchester United, including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. His vast international football experience is expected to inspire Tanzanian youth aiming to reach the highest level in the sport.
The visit is also expected to create new opportunities for investment in sports, talent development, and stronger partnerships between Tanzania and global sports stakeholders.
