African champions Mamelodi Sundowns continued to showcase their quality with an impressive 3-1 victory over German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in a friendly match played in Pretoria, South Africa, on Tuesday night.
Leipzig were the first to find the net through young striker Samba Konaté, who scored in the 22nd minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead before halftime. The Bundesliga side controlled much of the first half and created several dangerous opportunities.
However, Sundowns returned with renewed energy in the second half and demonstrated why they are regarded as one of Africa’s top teams. After missing several clear chances earlier in the half, the hosts eventually equalized in the 76th minute through Brayan León, who finished off a well-worked move created by Tashreeq Matthews.
As the match approached its conclusion, Sundowns increased the pressure on their opponents. Brayan León struck again in the 89th minute to complete his brace and turn the score in favor of the South African champions.
Bennet Mokoena then added a third goal in stoppage time (90+2) to seal an emphatic 3-1 victory over the Bundesliga outfit.
The result highlighted Mamelodi Sundowns’ growing strength on the continental stage and provided another statement performance against high-level international opposition.
