CAF Set to Hold AFCON 2027 Qualifiers Draw Ahead of Historic East Africa Tournament

The draw for the group stage of the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in a ceremony that is highly anticipated across the continent.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the draw will determine the group format that will guide the journey of 48 teams toward the AFCON 2027 finals, which will be hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Further details indicate that the ceremony will be held in Cairo, Egypt at 9:00 PM local time, with preparations already completed to ensure a transparent and well-organized event in line with CAF standards.

CAF also confirmed that the qualifiers will involve a total of 48 teams, including the three host nations, who have already secured automatic qualification for the finals. The format will ultimately produce 24 teams for the final tournament.

The AFCON 2027 tournament will be historic for East Africa, as it marks the first time that Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will jointly host Africa’s biggest football competition.

The finals are scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027, with infrastructure development and stadium preparations ongoing across all three host nations to ensure world-class standards.
