The Tunisian Football Federation has appointed French coach Hervé Renard as the new head coach of the national team for the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. His appointment follows the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi after Tunisia suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening Group F match.
According to reports, Renard is expected to arrive at the team’s training camp tomorrow to finalize contract-signing procedures before officially taking charge of Tunisia’s two remaining group-stage matches against Japan and the Netherlands.
Lamouchi, who was appointed in January this year on a contract expected to run until 2028, has become the first coach to be dismissed during the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the disappointing result against Sweden. Tunisia’s football authorities have opted for swift changes in an effort to revive the team’s hopes of progressing in the tournament.
Renard is regarded as one of Africa’s most respected coaches. He made history by winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Zambia in 2012 and with Ivory Coast in 2015. He is also widely known for guiding Saudi Arabia to a famous victory over Argentina in one of the biggest upsets of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Sources close to the Tunisian Football Federation indicate that Renard’s appointment is not focused solely on the remaining World Cup matches. It is also part of a long-term strategy aimed at rebuilding the squad and strengthening the team’s competitiveness in the years ahead.
Tunisia is currently facing a difficult situation after opening its campaign with a heavy defeat to Sweden. However, Renard’s arrival has restored hope among supporters, who believe his extensive international experience could help the team improve its performances in the remaining matches against Japan and the Netherlands.
