Proposal to Replace Iran with Italy at 2026 World Cup Sparks Debate

A proposal calling on FIFA to remove Iran from the 2026 World Cup and replace them with Italy has sparked widespread debate across both football and political circles.

According to a report by Financial Times, Paolo Zampolli, an associate of Donald Trump, confirmed that he submitted the proposal to Trump as well as FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

“I suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy should take Iran’s place. It would be a dream to see the Azzurri play in a World Cup hosted in the United States,” Zampolli was quoted as saying, highlighting Italy’s history as four-time world champions.

Reports further indicate that the proposal may also be linked to efforts to improve diplomatic relations between Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

That relationship had reportedly faced strain following remarks made by Trump in the context of international tensions involving Iran, bringing political dynamics into the football discussion.

No Official FIFA Decision

Despite the ongoing debate, FIFA has not issued any official statement about removing Iran from the tournament.

Iran has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup through the Asian qualifiers and continues its preparations for the finals, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Meanwhile, Italy failed to qualify after losing 4-1 on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the European playoffs, leaving them out of the tournament.
